Head Tutor

Until 2019, I held the position of Head Tutor at the UCC Skills Centre. Part of my role was to coordinate and liaise between the core tutor group and the administration of the Skills Centre and the university, to help plan, organize and motivate everyone behind the scenes. Together with Kathy Bradley, the Centre's chief coordinator and my team, I design new classes and material, plan new events and projects for the Centre, recruit new tutors and bring lots of positive energy to the work day.

Currently, I continue to work for the Skills Centre on a voluntary basis.

#WriteHereWriteNow - Skills Centre Radio Show

Since summer 2017, on every Friday (2-3pm), my team and I are live on Cork's radio station 98.3FM. We host shows about academic skills and interview experts from across the university about academic writing, essays, building an argument, and finding your feet in academia.

You can find all shows from the last semesters here!

Teaching at the Skills Centre

As an instructor and tutor at the Centre, I help the students with a variety of academic  skills, however, the main focus is on the students' writing. In 1-2-1 writing clinics, for example, I discuss the students' specific issues and concerns and support them in their efforts to improve their writing, planning, structuring and building an argument. Often, we will work through drafts together and revise, redraft and refine their essay assignment. Giving my students individual and constructive feedback and advice on how to improve their academic skills is very important to me and I aim to create a comfortable and positive learning environment. Being communicative and providing the students with practical strategies and techniques to become more confident in academia is essential to my teaching approach. Apart from 1-2-1 sessions, I teach, for example, essay writing classes, courses on academic text styles, editing and proofreading, how to develop an academic argument and essentials in punctuation, syntax and grammar.
